And One's Who didn't Plan on Parenting Alone

Moreover, those mothers who intentionally and proudly parent alone deserve immense respect and support. But this brings us to a broader question that deserves greater attention and research: How many single mothers in America intended to raise their child alone from the beginning? The truth is that stable single-mother households are rare, particularly among those who never married their child’s father. This suggests that many women likely envisioned a co-parenting relationship that did not come to fruition. According to research from the National Library of Medicine, most single mothers face significant financial instability, with economic independence and stability often feeling out of reach. Additionally, 76% of single mothers in the U.S. have less than a bachelor’s degree, which further limits their opportunities and long-term security. These statistics emphasize the urgent need to reevaluate and reform how our legal systems treat nonmarital families—in theory and practice.

However, for the many who entered motherhood expecting a shared parenting journey, the sudden disappearance or dismissal of the father figure due to legal or social constructs should not be normalized. Children of divorce are often respected and protected by structured legal frameworks that mandate shared responsibility by both parents. Similarly, children born to "unmarried" parents are left with assumptions and presumptions that can limit their access to paternal involvement.
